Yao never accomplished anything that would make him a HoF candidate... he had bad luck with injuries and probably never was able to reach peak of his game, but it happens... there are many other great players whose careers were destroyed by injuries (Grant Hill and Vince Carter for example, the two i managed to recall in matter of seconds) and who never achieved what they were predicted to... ok, i agree - Yao brought lots of attention from China and opened huge market for NBA as brand.

Yao Ming, the pioneer of Chinese basketball, is retiring from the NBA after eight seasons. The promise that came with his size and talent was never fulfilled, and now he leaves the game as a once-prized asset that could never contend with numerous injuries.

The big man that entered the NBA in the grandest of manners is leaving in the most demure way imaginable. A simple tweet let the sports world know they had lost the services of the affable giant from China.

Slowed by injuries, Rockets center Yao retires


HOUSTON -- Yao Ming, the first major Chinese star to break into the NBA, has decided to retire after nine star-crossed seasons with the Rockets, according to league sources.

Yahoo! Sports was the first to report the announcement.
The 30-year-old center played just five games over the past two seasons and has determined that he is unable to make a complete recovery from stress fracture in his left ankle and tendon strain.

Yao Ming Will Not Be a Houston Rocket Next Season

Yao Ming is a guy whose career has been derailed by injuries, and this season was no exception.

Although he might be the most influential basketball player of all-time, Ming might not necessarily be needed in Houston, where they are clearly looking at other options currently.

After nine seasons, the Yao Ming experiment will officially come to a halt.
